APPLICATIONS A number of applications have already been shown to be promising and are being actively explored. Some rely on their specific advantages over carbon nanotubes, acting as a direct replacement. A number of applications, biosensors and tribological applications rely on the special inherent chemical properties of MOSIx materials. In the area of molecular scale interconnects, the nanowires are unique due to their metallic longitudinal conductivity and ability to bond to thiols directly via the S-S bond.
Areas of applications currently pursued are:
- High conductivity composites and transparent electrodes arising from low percolation threshold and good dispersion characteristics
- Low-friction composites and ultra-low-friction lubricant additives
- Field emission devices. Current densities >2 mA/cm2 from single-step processed Mo surfaces are readily achieved. Single tip emission equals or exceeds CNT performance with high stability and good vacuum tolerance.
- Electrodes in Li batteries, particularly in micro- batteries
- A unique system for interconnects and vias in molecular electronics using small diameter bundles (<5 nm diameter)
- Nanoscale electrodes in bionanosensor applications. Their advantage is their ability of interfacing to biological molecules directly via thiol -gold or S-S bonds without need for spacers
